Vol. 9 No. 21

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - COMPENSATION CLAIMS.

SEAN O LAIDHIN

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that Mr. Michael Mackney, Mount Hussy, Athlone, was awarded £120 in November, 1923, as compensation for property burned by British Forces; and to ask that payment of this award be expedited.

There is no record in my Department of a claim by Mr. Mackney, nor of the award to which the Deputy refers. If he will furnish some further information, I will have enquiries made.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the compensation awarded to Edward Grace, Ballymore-Eustace, Co. Kildare, early in the present year, for loss sustained by him during the disturbances of July, 1922, has not been paid, and whether he will enquire into the matter.

The amount recommended by the Judge in this case will be paid at an early date.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the application of David Barry, Knockgriffin, Midleton, Co. Cork, for compensation for the murder of his son by British Forces has been refused by the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Commission; whether he will state if it is possible to allow some compensation in this case under the arrangement arrived at between the British and Saorstát Governments in such cases.

I am aware that the application referred to by the Deputy was refused by the Compensation (Personal injuries) Committee on the ground that there was no dependency of the applicant upon the deceased. The arrangement arrived at between the Saorstát and British Governments applies only to cases in which recommendations for payment of compensation are made by the Committee.
