Vol. 10 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DIVISION OF UNTENANTED LAND.

EAMON O DUBHGHAILL

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he is now in a position to state whether the Land Commission will acquire any untenanted land in County Carlow for division amongst uneconomic holders and landless men; whether he is aware that landlords are carrying out sales of such land with a view to evading the Land Act, 1923; and whether the new tenancies thus created, to the detriment of a large number of uneconomic holders and landless men, will have his sanction.

The Land Commission are making inquiries about untenanted land in County Carlow, and any information which the Deputy may furnish with regard to untenanted land will be considered. As regards the latter part of the question, it has been pointed out, in reply to somewhat similar questions by Deputies, that a change of ownership does not prevent the Land Commission from exercising its power of acquisition under the Land Act, 1923, provided the lands are needed for the purposes of the Act, and that they are lands which can be acquired under its provisions.
