WRITTEN ANSWERS. - SURCHARGES IN DUNMANWAY.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the total amount of the surcharges recently made by an auditor of his Department against the Dunmanway (County Cork) Rural Council and the late Board of Guardians, and the items in respect of which such surcharges were made, and, further, if he will state whether it is intended to remit such surcharges, or any part thereof.

The amount of the surcharges made at the recent audit of the accounts of the Dunmanway Rural District Council for the period from the 1st April, 1920, to 31st March, 1924, was £111 12s. 0d. No appeals have yet been received and particulars of the items surcharged are not yet available.

The amount of the surcharges made at the audit of the accounts of the former Board of Guardians of Dunmanway Union for the period from the 1st April, 1920, to 30th April, 1924, was £364 0s. 8d. Appeals have been received in respect of sums amounting to £363 19s. 8d. The amounts surcharged were in respect of (1) outdoor relief, £290 19s. 0d.; (2) cost of living bonus to officers in excess of scale, £45 1s. 1d.; (3) statute-barred payments, £23 9s. 7d.; and (4) conveyance of patient for special hospital treatment, £4 10s. 0d.

The several appeals received will require to be investigated, and some time must elapse before a decision thereon can be given.
