Vol. 11 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DESTRUCTION OF SALMON BY SEALS AT RINGSEND.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he is aware that seals have recently caused considerable damage to the nets of fishermen engaged in salmon fishing at Ringsend, and frequently a large number of salmon has been destroyed, and if he will state whether any steps will be taken to prevent further damage being done by these unwelcome visitors.

I have not received any reports, except that forwarded by the Deputy to-day, that seals have caused considerable damage to the nets of fishermen of Ringsend. With a view to encouraging the destruction of these animals, the Dublin Board of Conservators of Fisheries pay a reward of £1 for each seal killed inside the Poolbeg and North Bull Lights.

I formally recommend the Department of Justice to grant permits for rifles to persons who apply for them for the destruction of seals.
