Vol. 11 No. 16

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DEPENDENT'S ALLOWANCE (BANDON).

SEAN PRIOMHDHAIL

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the dependents of the late Volunteer Timothy FitzGerald, of Mawmore, Bandon, who was shot by British Forces on the 29th August, 1920, have been offered an ex-gratia payment of £60; that the deceased, who was an only son, contributed materially to the upkeep of his father and mother, and whether, in the circumstances, he is prepared to reconsider this case with a view to increasing this ex-gratia payment.

The gratuity of £60 was awarded to the relatives of the late Volunteer Timothy FitzGerald mainly as a result of representations made by the Deputy. Unless some new facts are put forward I regret that I would not feel justified in increasing the award.

I wish to state that this Volunteer was one of the first to be shot in action, and that his parents are poor people.

The Deputy is not allowed to make a statement now, but he can ask a supplementary question.
