Vol. 13 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LIMERICK COUNTY COUNCIL.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state whether the Limerick County Council is in a state of bankruptcy, and, if not, whether he can give the assets and liabilities of the said Council, under the following headings:—(1) Liabilities: (a) Loan in relief of rates on agricultural land for the current year, 1924-25; (b) Overdraft in Bank, if any, and when incurred; (c) Instalments of demands to various subsidiary bodies in detail; (d) Arrears of wages; (2) Assets: (a) Rates outstanding recoverable; (b) Grants due, or accruing for period ending 30th September, 1925; and (c) the estimated position of Council at end of financial year 1925-6; (3) Amount of non-recoverable rates.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. A letter received from the County Secretary on the 5th instant gives the following information:—

Financial position of Limerick County as at 30/9/'25.

Liabilities.

1.

On foot of outstanding loans

£129,484

2.

Overdrafts

97,017

3.

To subsidiary Bodies

91,043

4.

In respect of wages

18,983

5.

Other liabilities

23,690

Assets.

6.

Arrears of rates

£139,776

7.

Grants

26,467

The valuation of the County is £477,000.

Presumably the first liability shows the full amount of loan indebtedness, including that of £93,400 borrowed under the Local Government (Rates on Agricultural Land) Act, 1924. As the loans are repayable in instalments, only those chargeable to the year of account should be reckoned to assess the present actual deficit. I am making further inquiries on the subject and will notify the Deputy of the result in due course.

When will the Minister be able to make a final report, and could he say when will we have this report or will it be possible to have it this week?

I could not state that definitely. I believe we will.
