Vol. 14 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RECLAMATION OF SLOBLANDS, GLOUNTHANE, CORK.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether, in the interests of the uneconomic holders of land, landless men, and in view of the serious unemployment and distress in Knockraha, Little Island, Glounthane, and Carrigtwohill areas, he will instruct his engineers to make investigations into and report to his Department on the proposed scheme of reclamation of sloblands, about 200 acres in extent, at Glounthane, near Cork, and whether, in the event of a favourable report from his engineers, he will take steps to have a sum, approximately £4,000, according to a recent rough estimate of a local engineer, set aside out of the Relief Grant, to carry through this permanent productive scheme, and whether he is aware that this would improve the conditions of the inhabitants in the areas adjoining, as well as prove a considerable asset to the State.

Before a proposal of this nature could be fully examined on its merits, it would be necessary to have full particulars of the scheme, including maps, specifications and estimates and further information as to the present rights to ownership of the area involved and how it is proposed that the lands reclaimed will be disposed of. I will take the matter up with the Department of Lands and Agriculture and have it fully considered.
