Vol. 14 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. CORK COAST EROSION.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the numerous complaints from Youghal Urban District Council and from residents of Redbarn, near Youghal, Co. Cork, of the serious erosion along the foreshore at Redbarn; whether he will have investigations and reports made at an early date by the Board of Works into the nature of, the damage caused by, and probable cost of protection of property against this erosion, and whether he will set aside out of the Relief Grant a reasonable sum towards the protection of these lands and property; whether the Board of Works, or other Department have previously investigated the damage caused by this erosion, and whether a loan on reasonable terms to Youghal Urban District Council or Cork County Council to cover the cost of a necessary protection wall or dam would be arranged.

Representations have been received on the subject of coast erosion at Redbarn, but I have no information which would indicate that the matter is one in which a grant could be made from the Relief Schemes Vote. There is at present no provision for making loans to local authorities for the purpose of financing undertakings of this nature. The question to which the Deputy refers, whether steps can be taken to repair the damage is, however, still under consideration by the Land Commission.
