Vol. 14 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RAILWAY NOTICES IN IRISH AND ENGLISH.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that under Section 68 of the Railways Act, 1924, the Great Southern Railways Company are required to replace all their public notices and signs (including names of stations) which are now in the English language by notices and signs in both Irish and English, and whether the Company also were required by this section to submit a scheme to the Minister within one year from the 1st January, 1925, for the printing of their passenger card tickets in both the Irish and English languages, and, if so, whether any steps have been taken by the Railway Company to carry out their obligations in this respect.

I am informed by the Great Southern Railways Company that instructions have been given that in every case where public notices and signs are being renewed they shall be replaced by notices and signs in both Irish and English. In the present state of the Company's finances little renewal has yet been done, but wherever it has this notice has been acted upon.

The Company has submitted to me a scheme for the printing of the passenger card tickets in both the Irish and English languages and the matter is at present under consideration.

Have those responsible for the language been able to manufacture pharses that will deal with the situation?
