Vol. 16 No. 3

IN COMMITTEE ON FINANCE. - VOTE 45 (DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION).

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £116,846 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1927, chun costaisí na Roinne Oideachais mar gheall ar chostaisí Riaracháin Cigireachta, etc.

That a sum not exceeding £116,846 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1927, for the Expenses of the Department of Education in respect of costs of Administration, Inspection, etc.

I think it is hardly worth while starting on this Vote to-night at this hour. I have here a very excellent advertisement about hams, green long sides, heads, sausages, puddings, lard and other edibles, and in glaring red print on another side of the postcard I find the following:—

Where the money goes! National Schools—Salaries of teachers, principals and assistants, etc., for all Ireland, 1914/15, £1,414,000; Do., Saorstát, 1926/27, £3,024,000. In addition —Seven new preparatory schools are to be acquired or built for the education of monitors at an estimated capital cost of £150,000, and their upkeep is estimated at £51,000 per annum.

The State has arrogated to itself the parental responsibility for the education of the child. The result is both costly and inefficient. It is bad for the child and not good for the parent.

In the absence of Deputy O'Mara I rather hesitate to attack this particular Vote to-night. I suggest that we might leave it over for to-morrow, and I accordingly move to report progress.

The Dáil went out of Committee.
Progress reported; the Committee to sit again to-morrow.
