CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PRE-WAR D.M.P. PENSIONERS.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received from the Secretary, Dublin Metropolitan Police Pre-War Pensioners' Association, a resolution protesting against the action of the British and Saorstát Governments in depriving them of the benefits of the Pensions Increase Act, 1924, which have been granted to all other pre-war British pensioners, including the R.I.C., the Postal Service, Prison Service, etc., and if he intends to take any action in the matter.

I have received from the Secretary, Dublin Metropolitan Police Pre-War Pensioners' Association, the resolution referred to by the Deputy in the first part of his question. As the cost of any increases granted by the British Government under their Pensions Increase Act, 1924, to pre-war British pensioners is borne entirely by British Funds, I regret I cannot, as suggested by the Deputy, take action to ensure that the pre-war D.M.P. pensioners will receive an increase. The pensioners themselves are, of course, free to make any representations they may desire direct to the British Government.

Does the Minister recognise the discrimination between these pre-war pensioners as compared with the pre-war pensioners of the R.I.C.?

In anything analogous that has been done, the cost has been met by the British, and we do not feel disposed to undertake additional charges in respect of pre-war D.M.P. pensioners.
