Vol. 16 No. 11

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - DUBLIN COMPENSATION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that Volunteer Michael O'Haire (Army No. 1812, No. 2 Company Guards, Dublin) was killed in action on July 23rd, 1922, at Donaskeigh, Co. Tipperary; that his parents were in receipt of £1 per week from him before he joined the National Army; that they were almost entirely dependent on him for their support, and if he will state what steps, if any, were taken to grant them reasonable compensation for the loss sustained through the death of their son.

I am aware of the circumstances in which Private O'Haire met his death. A claim under the Army Pensions Act, 1923, was received from his mother. Investigations disclosed the fact that she had not been wholly dependent on her deceased son. A pension could not therefore be granted to her. She was, however, awarded a gratuity of £100, which is the maximum admissible under the Act.
