Vol. 19 No. 22

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - IMPORTATION OF DUTIABLE GOODS.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a letter addressed to Miss Alice Canny, Killeen, Corofin, has been detained by the Revenue Authorities at Cork on suspicion of containing contraband; and whether release has been offered on condition of payment of 5/- duty, with a fine of a further sum of 5/-, and whether he is further aware that any dutiable articles contained therein have not been imported to the order of Miss Canny, and if he can state the regulation under which this fine is levied.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The importation of dutiable goods by letter post is prohibited and goods imported in contravention of this regulation are liable to seizure. The packet addressed to Miss Canny was found to contain dutiable goods and as no aggravating features were present, the penalty of seizure was waived and delivery was allowed on payment of duty and fine. On the 26th ultimo, Miss Canny wrote to the Revenue Commissioners enclosing a remittance of 5/- as payment of duty and requesting that owing to poor circumstances she might be excused payment of the fine. On consideration of this appeal, the Revenue Commissioners decided to waive payment of the fine and to allow the packet to be released on payment of duty. The law and regulations on the subject were fully communicated to the Deputy in my answer of 25th November, 1925.
