CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - OIFIGIGH AN GHARDA SA GHAELTACHT.

D'fhiafruigh

den Aire Dlí agus Cirt an bhfuil a fhios aige nach bhfuil Gaedhilg ag Ceannphort an Ghárda Síochána sa Chlochán Liath i dTír Chonaill, go bhfuil an ceanntar atáfá chúram an Cheannphuirt úd ar na háiteacha is Gaedhealaighe in Eirinn, agus gur minic a bhíos an Ceannphort, 'na shuidhe ins an gCúirt sa bhFálcarrach agus in áiteacha eile agus gan é bheith ábalta ar an bhiadhnaise atá dá tabhairt ag na Gárdaí féin a thuisgint, agus cad is mian leis an Aire a dhéanamh sa scéal san.

The Superintendent at present stationed at Dungloe was allocated to that District a few months ago. He had some knowledge of Irish and it was hoped that with the special facilities there available he would in a short time acquire an adequate knowledge of the language. This procedure is in fact unavoidable if a sufficiency of competent Irish speaking officers is to be provided for the Gárda. At present the number of persons who combine an adequate knowledge of Irish with the other qualifications essential to a police officer is necessarily limited, and in addition, internal administrative reasons, such as the inexpediencey of a police officer serving in his native county, or in his wife's native county, make the task of manning the Irish-speaking districts with Irish-speaking officers extremely difficult.
