Vol. 21 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - REINSTATEMENT OF TEACHERS.

asked the Minister for Education whether any decision has been arrived at regarding the representations made by the Irish National Teachers' Organisation for the reinstatement of teachers from whom recognition was withdrawn in connection with the troubled period 1922-23.

These teachers were closely identified with the campaign against the existence of the State, and in some cases were active participants therein. The new political circumstances have, however, in the opinion of the Government, made it possible for them to consider favourably the representations referred to in the question. It has, accordingly, been decided to recognise these teachers as again eligible for employment in national schools.

Will they be reinstated, and if so, will the increment be calculated for the total period of their services as national teachers?

The Deputy forgets that we do not employ national teachers.

But you pay the increment.
