Vol. 21 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ELPHIN WATER AND SEWERAGE SCHEME.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is prepared, in view of the absolute necessity and urgency, in the interests of public health, of the proposed Elphin water and sewerage scheme, and in view of the fact that the proposed scheme would impose too heavy a burden on the local rates, to recommend a grant in aid of the scheme.

There are no funds at the disposal of the Department out of which a grant in aid of such schemes could be made. As already intimated to the local authority an advance from the Local Loans Fund will be made if the plans of the scheme on submission to the Department are found to be satisfactory. The Department could not accept the view that the proposed scheme would impose too heavy a burden on local rates if the cost is spread over a suitable area of charge.
