Vol. 21 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PENSION WITHHELD.

Mr. BOLAND (for Mr. Derrig)

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health to state the reasons for withholding the old age pension from Patrick Brennan, Borris, and, if it has been withheld by reason of lack of evidence as to age, to state what provision, if any, he intends to make for a reconsideration of such cases.

It was determined on appeal on the 30th of August last that this claimant was not entitled to an old age pension, as it did not appear on the evidence that he had attained the statutory age of 70 years. No birth or baptismal certificate was produced. A record was, however, produced from Carlow Health Insurance Society which showed that the claimant gave his age as 53 years on the 15th of July, 1912. A search was made in the Register of Borris National School for a record of his age without avail. The claimant stated that he was older than his sister who was baptised on the 5th of December, 1854, but this statement was not substantiated. If he is now in a position to produce more conclusive evidence of age it is open to him to make a fresh claim in the usual way.
