Vol. 21 No. 10

ORAL ANSWERS. - DUNMORE AND MONIVEA DRAINAGE DISTRICTS (GALWAY).

asked the Minister for Finance if a report has yet been furnished with regard to the Dunmore and Monivea Drainage Districts in the County of Galway, and, if so, what are the proposals of the Ministry for dealing with those areas, the inhabitants of which have for a very long time suffered serious loss and damage owing to the constant flooding of their lands.

Mr. BOURKE

The Dunmore Drainage District was inspected by an engineer appointed for the purpose by the Commissioners of Public Works under Section 2 (1) of the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924. On consideration of his report it was decided to obtain a general report from a land valuer as to the increased value to be expected from the carrying out of restoration works in the district. Until this further report—on which the valuer is at present engaged—is received, a decision cannot be arrived at.

It is not proposed at present to restore the existing Monivea Drainage Districts under the Act of 1924, because three petitions under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, were received from the Galway County Council in respect of the Abbert River and tributaries, which include the principal streams in the existing Monivea district. The proposals have been examined and reported on by an engineer, and at present a land valuer is engaged in making a detailed valuation of the lands that would be improved if a joint scheme for the formation of a new district was proceeded with. A decision will be arrived at as soon as possible after this report is received.
