Vol. 22 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMPENSATION CLAIM FOR DEATH OF WOUNDED PRISONER.

Dr. O'DOWD

asked the Minister for Defence whether he proposes to hold an inquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Patrick Mulrennan, of Lisacul, Ballaghaderreen, who was wounded while a prisoner in Custume Barracks, Athlone, on 6th October, 1922, and whether he will reconsider his decision not to recommend compensation to the widowed mother of the deceased.

Mr. FITZGERALD

The answer to both parts of the question is in the negative.

Dr. O'DOWD

Is the Minister aware that this man died from wounds received by a shot fired by an officer of the Free State Army?

Mr. FITZGERALD

Yes.

Dr. O'DOWD

Will the Minister tell the House why he is afraid to hold an inquiry into the death of this man?

Mr. FITZGERALD

I am not afraid to hold an inquiry. There were three inquests partially held on him.

Dr. O'DOWD

In view of the fact that the Minister has stated that a coroner's inquest was held and adjourned three times without a conclusion being arrived at, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the question on the motion for the Adjournment.
