Vol. 22 No. 5

WRITTEN QUESTIONS. - ASSESSMENTS FOR 1923-24.

Mr. FLINN

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the gross number of assessments made for each of the years 1923-24 forward on (a) companies; (b) individuals, and (c) the gross income and net assessable income brought into assessment by reason of such assessments.

Mr. BLYTHE

No particulars are compiled which would enable the number of assessments made on (a) companies, (b) individuals, and (c) the gross income and net assessable income brought into assessment by reason of such assessments to be stated.

The particulars could only be obtained at the expenditure of a considerable amount of time and labour which, in view of the present state of Income Tax work, would not, it is considered, be justifiable.

Mr. FLINN

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the gross number of assessments made under each Income Tax schedule making up the gross income per schedule; (b) the net number of such gross assessments per schedule which yielded an assessable balance for the years 1923-24 and subsequent years.

Mr. BLYTHE

No particulars are compiled which would enable the number of gross and net assessments under each schedule to be stated. The particulars could only be obtained at the expenditure of a considerable amount of time and labour which, in view of the present state of Income Tax work, would not, it is considered, be justifiable. It should, however, be stated for the Deputy's information that the number of individuals assessable to Income Tax in the Saorstát is estimated to be 75,000.
