Vol. 22 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - IRISH LIGHTS SERVICE—EMPLOYEES' GRIEVANCE.

Mr. R. CORISH

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that, while the Irish cost-of-living figure is paid on the wages of employees in the Irish Lights Service—still a non-transferred service, paid from a British Fund— their supplementary pensions are paid on the British cost-of-living figure; whether he is aware that this anomaly has been pointed out to the British Board of Trade, who are evidently willing to rectify this grievance if the Saorstát Government withdraw their objection; and whether, in view of previous undertakings, he will now request the British Board of Trade to sanction claims made to the Irish cost-of-living figure.

Mr. BLYTHE

I understand that the facts are as stated in the first part of the question. As matters stand the Government of the Irish Free State see objection on financial grounds to agreeing to the Irish cost-of-living bonus on the pensions referred to, but the Government will be prepared to reconsider the matter when the transfer of the service has been effected.

Mr. CORISH

Would the Minister say if we may expect a transfer of that service in the near future?

Mr. BLYTHE

I could not say.
