Vol. 22 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LETTER-CENSORSHIP.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (a) the average number of letters per month passing through the post which are censored; (b) what instructions, if any, have been issued to the censor to guide him in the selection of letters to be censored.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state on what date the censorship was abolished?

I am not aware that an official censorship was in existence at any time since the days of the Great War.

Might I ask is the secret censorship which is known to exist unofficial and without your authority?

There is no censorship in existence.

Might I ask if he is aware that I have received numbers of letters marked "Censored, I.R.A.," which were removed from the custody of the Post Office by unauthorised persons?

I received letters myself which put it beyond all doubt that they were censored by the Post Office, and which were stamped outside for me to send back the envelope to the Postmaster.

The members of the Party opposite know a good deal more about letter-censorship than we do, but if Deputies have any information with regard to letters being opened and transmit that information to me, I shall have careful inquiries made into it.

Who will make the inquiry?
