Vol. 22 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RURAL POSTMEN'S APPOINTMENTS.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs will he state the qualifications governing the appointment of rural postmen.

Rural postmen are recruited from boy messengers who obtain Civil Service certificates by competitive examination held by the Civil Service Commissioners under the Civil Service Regulation Acts. I might add for the information of the Deputy that we take this question as applying only to established postmen. The information given is given only in regard to established postmen. There are also other large classes of postmen, auxiliary postmen and part-time postmen. If the Deputy requires information regarding the system of recruitment of these men, I will gladly supply it.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that I recently wrote to the Department concerning an appointment in Killarney, and I asked that a certain man who was carrying on duties in a temporary capacity be continued, and the reply I got was that ex-National Army men should get preference?

The Deputy is not dealing now with the established class. These men do not belong to the established class, and the original question put to me was taken as applying to the established class.
