Vol. 22 No. 9

RESIGNATION OF LEAS-CHEANN COMHAIRLE.

Before beginning public business, I wish to state that the Leas-Cheann Comhairle desires, through me, to tender to the Dáil his resignation of the office of Leas-Cheann Comhairle. He desires to express his appreciation of the kindness, courtesy and assistance which he received during his term of office from all Deputies.

Might I ask whether the Leas-Cheann Comhairle is willing to give to the Dáil his reasons for taking this serious step?

I have not considered that matter. I only got notice of it a few minutes before 3 o'clock. I do not think a debate can arise on it now. It is a matter for consideration as to what steps can be taken on the matter of his resignation.

My question was whether the Leas-Cheann Comhairle is willing to give his reasons to the Dáil for taking this step.

I am willing to do so.

How are we to determine the time for such debate?

I am prepared to settle that with the Leas-Cheann Comhairle. As the resignation of a Leas-Cheann Comhairle is an event which has never occurred before, it is my own view that in regard to a statement by Deputy Hogan it should not be made to-day, but apparently the resignation must take effect from the time it is announced by the Ceann Comhairle. It is not desirable that a debate should take place on it to-day. I will consult with Deputy Hogan as to when his statement can be made regarding his reasons for his resignation.
