Vol. 22 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CAHORE DRAINAGE.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state when it is proposed to have the drainage in the Cahore flooded area carried out.

Following inspections by an engineer and land valuer in 1925, it was decided not to restore the Cahore drainage district under the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924, as the annual charge on the occupiers—after allowing for a free grant of 50 per cent. of the actual cost—would exceed the estimated benefit to them.

The question of providing a new exit channel for this district has recently been under investigation by an engineer from the Commissioners of Public Works. His work has been unavoidably delayed by floods, and until his report is received and considered, it cannot be stated whether any works will be carried out in this district. If any works are found to be feasible, they should form the subject of a petition under the Arterial Drainage Act of 1925.

Am I to take it that the Parliamentary Secretary is stating that no work can be carried out there except work under the 1925 Drainage Act?

Mr. BOURKE

It would not be-feasible or economic except under that Act.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is a drainage board in this district?

Mr. BOURKE

I am quite aware of it.
