Vol. 23 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - MEDICAL OFFICER'S RESIDENCE (CASTLESHANE).

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he received on or about the 28th February last a memorial signed by a large number of ratepayers resident in the dispensary district of Castleshane, County Monaghan, pointing out serious objections to the scheme brought forward by the County Board of Health, for building a residence for the Medical Officer of Health in that district; whether receipt of this memorial was acknowledged, and, if so, on what date; whether any inquiry was made by disinterested qualified persons as to the substance of the statements in the memorial; and whether the Minister sanctioned the scheme.

A memorial stated to be signed by ratepayers resident in Castleshane Dispensary District was received by me on the 23rd February last. This memorial set out that the cost of the dispensary and residence was £1,600, that the site was not suitable and not central, and that the proposed rent, £35, was too small, as it did not provide a margin for paying off the capital. The memorial was carefully considered, the statements were investigated by one of the Department's Medical Inspectors, and Mr. William Carson, who forwarded the memorial, was informed on the 24th April that sanction was accorded to the building of the residence and dispensary, and I was not prepared to alter the decision in the matter. I have not yet accorded sanction to the rent proposed to be charged the medical officer.
