Vol. 23 No. 16

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. Oral Answers. - REMOVAL OF MONUMENTS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether it is the intention of the Roads Department to have the McCann Memorial Clock at Carrick-on-Shannon, and the Arch at Jamestown on the National Road from Carrick-on-Shannon to Longford, removed; by whom the recommendation was made, and whether the Minister is aware of the strong local feeling against the removal of these monuments.

This matter has not been before the Department. I have seen a Press report to the effect that the Council at their meeting on the 28th ultimo made an order refusing to grant the removal of the structures.

Was it not the officials of the Local Government Department who made the recommendations in the first instance?

The matter has not been before the Department. I understand there was an informal discussion of the matter between one of the Department's inspectors and the County Surveyor, but the proposal has never been formally made and never came before the Department.
