Vol. 25 No. 5

SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATE. - VOTE 57—RAILWAYS.

I ask for leave to introduce the following Supplementary Estimate:—

Go dtugaidh an Dáil cead chun go dtabharfaí isteach an Meastachán Breise seo leanas i gcóir seirbhíse na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1929, eadhon:—Vóta a 57 (Bóithre-Iarainn).

That leave be given by the Dáil to introduce the following Supplementary Estimate for the service of the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1929, viz.:—Vote 57 (Railways).

The purpose of this Supplementary Estimate is to give again this year the contribution which it has been found necessary, in recent years, to give to the Donegal railways. I am informed by the Minister for Industry and Commerce that, if we did not vote this Supplementary Estimate before the Recess there would be a danger that these railways might close down during that period.

What is the amount of the Estimate?

I think it is the same as usual.

I take it that the amount of this Supplementary Estimate is for the same amount as was voted for this particular railway last year?

MINISTER for INDUSTRY and COMMERCE (Mr. McGilligan)

It is £1,000 less.

Is the Minister aware that as a result of reducing this particular Estimate there is the possibility of a deadlock ensuing as far as that particular railway is concerned, because I understand that a number of the employees with long service have been threatened with dismissal? In view of the fact that none of the members of the staff wants a railway upheaval as a result of the action of the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company, I think we should have a statement either from the Minister for Finance or the Minister for Industry and Commerce as to how the position stands at present.

We cannot have that now.

This whole matter can be discussed when the Estimate is taken. Apparently what the Deputy wants is that the Dáil, in advance, should vote public moneys for redundant employees on that line?

What the Minister is asking for now is leave to introduce a Supplementary Estimate. I take it that the Estimate itself will be taken to-morrow?

Leave granted.
Estimate ordered to be taken to-morrow.
