Vol. 27 No. 4

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - AFFORESTATION IN PORTARLINGTON.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether an inspector of his Department visited Lord Portarlington's estate at Emo in connection with afforestation, and, if so, whether he can state the acreage thereon suitable for this purpose; whether, in view of the general depression in the agricultural industry, it is proposed to commence forestry work on this estate and so absorb in employment the men who were formerly employed on the estate and other unemployed men in that area.

Mr. HOGAN

I understand that the Land Commission authorities intend to offer for sale to the Department for forestry purposes an area of approximately 1,700 acres of land on the estate in question, but no formal offer has yet been received. No inspection of the lands is therefore being arranged for, nor can anything be said on the question of the employment of labour unless and until the land has been actually acquired.
