Vol. 28 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dispute in Beet Sugar Trade.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state what action, if any, the Government has taken with a view to bringing about a settlement of the dispute between the Carlow Sugar Manufacturing Company and the Beet Growers' Association.

In view of the existing situation, I would prefer not to make a statement at the moment on the matter.

Are we to understand that the Ministry therefore is prepared to allow the factory to continue canvassing individual growers and to break up the Association? If that is allowed to continue, the Association will be left without any bargaining power whatsoever. May I ask the Minister whether any steps have been taken to prevent the factory approaching individual growers except through the Association, and have those steps been taken by the Government?

That does not arise out of the question. I have discussed this matter with the Minister for Agriculture, the other Minister most interested, and I think it better to make no statement.

Is the Minister satisfied that the figures shown in the balance sheet would justify the firm in causing reduction of 10/- per ton in the raw material?

That certainly does not arise out of the question.

Owing to the lack of information on this matter. I intend to raise it on the adjournment.

I will refuse to answer on the adjournment, and the Deputy can talk to empty Government Benches if he likes.

I intend to raise this matter on the adjournment, whether I get an answer from the Government or not.

Very good.
