Vol. 29 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenditure in Revival of Irish Language.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the estimated total annual cost to the taxpayers and the ratepayers of the steps which have been taken by the Government to make Saorstát Eireann an Irish-speaking State, including (a) the annual cost of teaching the Irish language in primary and secondary schools and universities; (b) the annual cost of translating and printing official documents in the Irish language; (c) the various annual grants in aid of the Irish language; and (d) other annual expenditures in the revival of the Irish language.

The information asked for will take some time to obtain. I am in communication with the departments concerned with a view to furnishing detailed figures, and I would ask the Deputy to repeat his question in a week.

Would the Minister consider answering a supplementary question in regard to this particular question? Would he supply: (a) the annual cost of teaching the English language in primary and secondary schools and universities; (b) the annual cost of translating and printing official documents in the English language; (c) the various annual grants in aid of the English language; (d) other annual expenditure in the propagation of the English language?

Is not that a different question?

That is a separate question.

If the Deputy puts that question down to-day it will be due for answer about the same time as the other.

Would the Minister also state the cost of translating Deputy Conlon's supplementary question into Irish?
