Vol. 31 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Cattle Shows.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether the shows held this year by the Kerry Cattle Society of Ireland in Kenmare, Waterville, Valentia Island, Shanacoshel (Glencar), and Caherdaniel, were under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture; and, if so, will he state why no show was held in Sneem or Cahirciveen; and whether, considering that Sneem is the home of the Kerry cattle, and that Cahirciveen is the centre of a large district where Kerry cattle are bred, he will take steps to ensure that neither of these centres will be overlooked in future when shows for Kerry cattle are being held in Kerry.

The local shows of Kerry cattle, held on 29th ultimo, mentioned in the Deputy's question, are organised by the Kerry Cattle Society of Ireland who, subject to the approval of the Kerry County Committee of Agriculture are responsible for the selection of the centres. Any representations which it is desired to make as regards the inclusion of Cahirciveen and Sneem as centres for shows should be addressed to the Secretary of the Kerry Cattle Society or of the Kerry County Committee of Agriculture.

Mr. O'Reilly

Does this society get a grant from the Department of Agriculture?

It may or may not, but I do not see how that affects the question.

Mr. O'Reilly

If the Department of Agriculture gives a grant it should be responsible for the action of the society.
