Vol. 32 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co. Mayo Migration Scheme.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when the proposed scheme of migration of the inhabitants of Inniskee Islands, Belmullet, County Mayo, is likely to be put into operation.

The question of the migration of the inhabitants of the Inniskee Islands is being considered in connection with a scheme which is being prepared for the division of the lands of Patrick J. O'Reilly in the townlands of Surgeview or Nakil and Letterbeg. Until the scheme is completed and approved the Land Commission are unable to state when it will be put into operation but the matter is being expedited as much as possible.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state if these people may hope to be migrated from the island for next spring or if they may hope to have any portion of land on the mainland, for tillage purposes during the coming spring?

A scheme is being prepared at the moment but I cannot say when it will be possible to migrate them.

I would like to impress on the Parliamentary Secretary the position of the islanders. They have been more or less given the impression that they would be migrated and they have very little interest in the island, as regards tillage or other matters of that kind. I trust that they will not be let down between two stools.
