Vol. 34 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Storing of Explosives.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is prepared to consider the granting of a licence for the purpose of storing explosives, to a suitable applicant in Skibbereen, Co. Cork.

I would be prepared to consider favourably an application from a suitable person in the Skibbereen district for a licence to establish a magazine for explosives. The site, of course, would have to be approved by the County Council and the magazine would have to conform in other respects with the provisions of the Explosives Act, 1875. Licensed magazines are intended for the storage of quantities of explosives exceeding 2,000 lbs. at any one time. If the quantities required were less than 2,000 lbs. the appropriate procedure would be to apply to the County Council for a licensed store. In that case a police certificate would also be necessary. I would suggest to the Deputy that the applicant whom he has in mind should write to my Department indicating clearly what his requirements are. My Department would then be in a position to tell him what steps he should take.
