Vol. 37 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Briar Pipes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he can furnish particulars of the value of imported manufactured briar pipes into the Saorstát for the years 1929-30; and also particulars of the number of persons engaged in the manufacture of briar pipes in the Saorstát.

Particulars of imports of briar pipes are not available. The value of the imports of "pipes for smoking tobacco," the Official Import List description, was £9,903 in 1929 and £11,609 in 1930. It is thought that the consignments consisted mostly of briar pipes. As practically all the manufacture of briar pipes in the Saorstát was carried on by only one firm I am precluded by the terms of the Statistics Act, under which the information was obtained, from stating the number of persons employed in the manufacture of briar pipes.
