Vol. 39 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Question of Tariffs on Foreign Products.

asked the President whether, in view of the depression in the bacon and grain industries, the Executive Council would refer to the Tariff Commission the question of the advisability of imposing a tariff on (a) imported bacon and pig products; (b) imported oats and oat products; and (c) imported barley and barley products.

In regard to (a) I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question on the subject on 17th ultimo to which I have nothing to add save that I understand that an application to the Tariff Commission by persons engaged in the production of bacon is in contemplation.

In regard to (b) the Executive Council have already referred to the Tariff Commission the question of the desirability of imposing a customs duty on imported oats. So far as oat products and imported barley and barley products mentioned at (c) are concerned, it is not the intention of the Executive Council to refer the advisability of imposing a tariff on these to the Tariff Commission.
