Written Answers. - Acquisition of Mayo (Balla) Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will now state what steps are being taken by the Irish Land Commission to acquire for the relief of congestion the large grazing farms, which contain over 800 acres, held by Messrs. McEllen, at Brownhall, Brize and Ardboley, near Balla, County Mayo.

The Land Commission have at present under consideration the question of the acquisition of the lands of Mr. John McEllen referred to.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware that acute congestion exists in the parishes of Mayo, Crossboyne and Balla; and if he will state what steps are being taken by the Irish Land Commission to acquire the grazing ranches, which contain over 800 acres, held by Mr. James Cowan on the De Clifford estate, at Knockadorraghy and Kilbride.

The question of the acquisition of the lands of Knockadorraghy and Knockroe, held by Mr. James Cowan, is at present under consideration by the Land Commission. The former lands are subject to a land purchase annuity.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware that acute congestion exists in the townlands of Kilnock and Tavanagh, where the poor law valuation of over 40 tenants is under £5 each, and if he will state the cause of the delay by the Irish Land Commission in acquiring Cuillane farm, on the Rush estate, held by Mrs. French.

The Land Commission are aware of the congestion existing in the townlands of Kilnock and Tavanagh and have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the lands of Cuillaun, containing 248a. 2r. 2p., with a view to relieving the congestion. As the Deputy has already been informed, an objection has been lodged to the acquisition of the lands, and this objection is still pending for hearing. The proceedings are progressing as expeditiously as possible.
