Vol. 39 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of Glenveagh Estate, Donegal.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state the date upon which it is intended to divide the Glenveagh (Adair) Estate, County Donegal, amongst the descendants of the tenants who were evicted therefrom.

It is not possible at present to state when the proceedings in respect of the untenanted lands on the former Adair Estate, now the property of Mr. Kingsley Porter, will be completed. The negotiations for purchase are being expedited as much as possible.

How does the Parliamentary Secretary make out that negotiations are being expedited as much as possible in view of the fact that this was one of the first estates particulars of which were lodged with the Land Commission under the 1923 Land Act? Will the Parliamentary Secretary say what is the cause of the prolonged delay?

The particulars of this estate were lodged quite early with the Land Commission, but the Land Commission had difficulty in verifying the particulars submitted by the owners. In the case of the majority of the Donegal estates there was difficulty in this connection, but it took a long time in this case to resolve difficulties of ownership and tenure. These difficulties have been settled quite recently and an arrangement has been come to between the owner and the Land Commission whereby it will be possible to have portion of the land divided.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary prepared to expedite that?

It has been expedited.

As this was one of the first estates particulars of which were lodged with the Land Commission under the 1923 Act, I cannot see how it has been expedited.
