Vol. 39 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ex-R.I.C. Pension.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the reasons assigned by Mr. Daniel O'Neill, now residing at Enniskeane, Co. Cork, for his resignation from the Royal Irish Constabulary when communicating it to the authorities of that force in April, 1918; (b) whether he has received an application from Mr. O'Neill for a pension under Section 5 of the Superannuation and Pensions Act, 1923, and (c) on what grounds he has refused to authorise the grant of a pension to Mr. O'Neill.

I have heard of the reasons given by Mr. O'Neill in 1918 for resigning from the Royal Irish Constabulary. The only official record of the reasons then stated is in documents in the custody of the British Government, the contents of which I am not in a position to disclose. As I have already caused the Deputy to be informed, I have received, and have refused, an application from Mr. O'Neill for a pension under Section 5 of the Superannuation and Pensions Act, 1923. In administering that section I have found it necessary to adopt the rule of not making public the reasons underlying the refusal of a pension, and accordingly I cannot see my way to give the Deputy the information asked for in the concluding part of his question.
