Vol. 39 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Units of Electricity Generated and Sold.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce to state (1) whether from time to time he has requested the Electricity Supply Board to furnish him with returns showing (a) the number of units of electricity generated at Ardnacrusha during each of the years ending the 31st March, 1929, 1930, and 1931, respectively (b) the number of units generated in other generating stations under the control of the Board for each of the years afore-mentioned; (c) the total number of units delivered in each of the years afore-mentioned, to the transmission and distribution system of the Board from all the stations under its control; (d) the total number of units of electricity sold by the Board in each of the years afore-mentioned; (2) whether such or any similar return has been furnished to him by the Board in respect of each or any of the years afore-mentioned.

The information required, except under part 1 (d), would appear to be included in that furnished in reply to the question asked by Deputy MacEntee, to which I would refer Deputy Briscoe.

Under part 1 (d) of the question the number of units sold by the Board were:—In the year ending 31st March, 1929, 1,355,000; in the year ending 31st March, 1930, 43,177,000; in the year ending 31st March, 1931, 84,413,000.

Could the Minister say what proportion of the 84,000,000 units for the last year are industrial units?

I have not got it here.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce to state: 1. (a) the estimated total number of units of electricity generated in generating stations attached to electricity supply and/or public utility undertakings in Saorstát Eireann during each of the years ending the 31st March, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930 and 1931, respectively; (b) the total number of such units in each of the years afore-mentioned, generated elsewhere than in stations under the control of the Electricity Supply Board; 2. (a) the total number of units of electricity delivered to the supply mains and distribution systems of electricity supply, and/or public utility undertakings in Saorstát Eireann in each of the years afore-mentioned; and (b) the total number of such units delivered to the mains of the Electricity Supply Board.

It has been necessary to prepare the required information, so far as available, in tabular form which will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the reply:—

The precise meaning of the Question is not clear but it is interpreted as requiring for the respective periods 1 (a) the units generated in all authorised, permitted and statutory undertakings as well as at Ardnacrushna; 1 (b) the proportion of such units generated in undertakings not acquired by the Board; 2 (a) the figures at 1 (a) less the total number of units consumed at the generating station; and 2 (b) the figures at 2 (a) less those applicable to undertakings not acquired by the Board.

These figures are given for each year in the following table, but they must be regarded, to a certain extent, as estimates, some of the undertakers' returns being made up to 31st March and others to 31st December:—
