Vol. 40 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Facilities in Co. Donegal.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he would consider the erection of an automatic stamp machine in Stranorlar, County Donegal, in view of the fact that no office exists there for the convenience of 800 inhabitants.

Automatic stamp-vending machines are erected only on post office premises where officials are available to give them the attention they require, and it would consequently not be practicable to provide such a machine at Stranorlar. Stamps can at present be obtained from the postman who serves the district, and if further facilities for the purchase of stamps be needed the question of issuing a licence for the sale of stamps to any suitable applicant will be favourably considered.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary not aware that it entails hardship on the people of Stranorlar to have to go to Ballybofey for stamps? Is he prepared to give effect to the last part of his answer by giving a licence to someone in Stranorlar to sell stamps? By doing so it would facilitate the people of that area.

I am given to understand that the centre of Stranorlar is only 550 yards from Ballybofey. The question of giving a licence to someone in Stranorlar will be favourably considered if we get an application from some person for a licence to sell stamps. We could not give a licence to a publican.
