Vol. 40 No. 20

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Improvement Works.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries to state the number and particulars of the improvement works commenced or proposed but uncompleted, in County Donegal, under the recent relief schemes.

The expenditure on works carried out in County Donegal by means of moneys allocated to the Land Commission from the Vote for the relief of unemployment and distress, has been completed with the exception of a grant for a road work at Doohy, in the parish of Lettermacaward, which is still proceeding.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that on the Leitrim estate many schemes, though approved, were never started for the reason given by the Parliamentary Secretary in reply to a question put in regard to those schemes, that the Land Commission were not prepared to carry out any further work on the Leitrim estate under the provisions of the Land Act of 1923. They went to the trouble of sending down their inspector and, as I understand it, the schemes were approved by their inspector. Will consideration be given to the carrying out of the schemes under the unemployment relief grant now before the House?

All the schemes approved under previous relief grants were carried out except the scheme referred to in the Deputy's question. The Deputy is probably referring to works on the 1923 estates. We do not carry out works there for a very good reason. These works will be automatically carried out later on when we come to deal with these estates.

Under this unemployment relief Vote would the Parliamentary Secretary be prepared to give consideration to the carrying out of an improvement scheme to give relief to people on estates purchased under the 1923 Land Act.

That work would be done in the ordinary way under the Estates Improvement Fund. I do not see why we should spend this money on work of that kind.

On what schemes is it intended to spend the money?

I do not know. The matter has not been considered at all yet.
