Vol. 41 No. 2

Vote 67—League of Nations.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim bhreise ná raghaidh thar £1,125 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1932, chun Deontas i gCabhair do Chostaisí Chumann na Náisiún agus chun Costaisí eile mar gheall air sin.

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £1,125 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1932, for a Grant-in-Aid of the Expenses of the League of Nations and for other expenses in connection therewith.

The necessity for a Supplementary Estimate on this Vote is also due to the depreciation in Saorstát currency, following the abandonment of the gold standard. The contribution to the League of Nations is payable in American dollars. The original estimate of £9,043 was based on the rate of exchange ruling for dollars at the time the estimate was prepared, January, 1931. With the depreciation of Saorstát currency, following the abandonment of the gold standard, that rate of exchange was no longer applicable in the purchase of American dollars. The gross additional sum required, is £1,425 on sub-head A. There will be an estimated saving of £300 on sub-head D. and accordingly the net sum required is £1,125.

In view of the dollar basis payment to the League of Nations would the Minister for Finance consider a dollar basis payment for the different legations so as to give some guarantee of a proper rate of exchange for our representatives?

That does not exactly arise on the estimate.

Vote put and agreed to.
