Vol. 41 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Living—(Index Number).

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the number of revenue taxes and tariffs recently imposed and promised in the immediate future, he will make arrangements for the more frequent compilation and circulation to members of the Dáil and Seanad of the Cost of Living Index Number.

I have no reason at present to anticipate that the expenditure of time and labour involved in the more frequent compilation of the cost of living figure would be justified.

Does the Minister not believe that the tariff policy which the present Government are carrying on is likely to cause a very considerable increase in the cost of living and, consequently, that there will be some ground for giving the public an opportunity of measuring this?

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative and the answer to the second part therefore does not arise.

What about the 4d. per lb. on butter?
