Vol. 43 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Decline in Railway Revenue.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has noticed the continuing serious decline in railway revenue, and if as a counter to the remissions proposed to be given to their competitors, the omnibuses, in consideration of their losses it is intended immediately to give relief to the Great Southern Railways Company proportionate to the losses which that company is sustaining.

Mr. Connolly (for the Minister for Industry and Commerce)

Periodical returns are furnished to the Department of Industry and Commerce by the Railway Companies which contain, inter alia, certain particulars of railway revenue. As regards the second part of the question I would remind the Deputy that the Railway Companies will receive, in respect of road passenger services operated by or for them, benefits which are proportionate to those to be received by private omnibus owners as a result of the reduction in the omnibus road tax.
