Vol. 43 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant for Landing Place at Sherkin.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that a sum of £150 has been allocated by the Cork County Council for the provision of a landing place at Sherkin Island, Baltimore, Co. Cork, and if, in view of the urgent need (for the protection of life) of improved landing facilities at the island, he will consider supplementing this sum from State funds.

I am not aware of the allocation referred to and I have not received any application from the County Council in respect of Sherkin Island landing place.

Mr. Murphy

Is the Minister quite sure about that?

Well, I have made inquiries and I have been informed that no representations have been made. If representations have been made we will consider them.

Mr. Murphy

I think the Minister will find in his Department a very comprehensive file on that matter.

Is the Minister aware that so far back as 1928, four years ago, his Department did what the Deputy is now asking to have done and offered the Cork County Council a grant towards this work and that for the last four years it has been found impossible to get the Cork County Council to move to accept the offer made in 1928?

That is so and it is because this landing place was under the Baltimore Harbour Board at the time.
