Vol. 45 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Robe (Mayo).

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the Commissioners of Public Works submitted proposals for the drainage of the River Robe to the Mayo County Council over five years ago; that the Mayo County Council agreed to same and gave the required guarantee, viz., to contribute six per cent. of the total cost, and passed the necessary statutory resolutions required by the Drainage Act, 1925, at their meeting in May, 1928, and if he will now state what steps were taken by the Commissioners since May, 1928, to prepare a scheme to have the drainage carried out.

The facts stated in the Deputy's question are correct except that the proposals were purely tentative. It was estimated originally that the scheme would cost £35,000, which would require a contribution from the Mayo County Council of 6% of that amount. The scheme has been considerably enlarged since the provisional proposition was laid before the County Council in 1928 and its financial aspect has altered.

Further investigation shows it will cost £45,000, even allowing for the maximum grant from the State of 50% of the cost and a contribution of 30% will be required from the County Council. Maps and schedules are in preparation with a view to submitting the facts in regard to this scheme to the Mayo County Council.
