Vol. 45 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in Co. Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware that acute congestion exists in the electoral divisions of Toocanagh, Killeaden and Meelick and Brackloon, Co. Mayo, where over 200 tenants have poor law valuations under £3 each and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Irish Land Commission to acquire the large grazing ranches known as Brownhall and Brize, held by Messrs. McEllin, Balla, which contain over 800 acres.

The Land Commission have had inquiry made regarding the position of the lands to which the Deputy refers and the conditions as regards congestion in the district. An offer has been made for the purchase of the lands of Tullymore and Tullybeg known as Brownhall, which the owner, Mr. McEllin, is not prepared to accept. The Land Commission have also been in negotiation with him for the acquisition of part of the lands of Barnagreggaun known as Drees. The question of what further action should be taken regarding all these lands is at present under consideration.
