Vol. 47 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employees of Approved Societies.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the number of persons (other than part-time local agents) employed by approved societies under the following headings:—(a) whole-time, and (b) part-time, and the estimated number of such employees whose services will be dispensed with under the provisions of the National Health Insurance Bill, 1933, also the estimated amount of compensation to be paid to such persons under the provisions of the Bill as introduced by the Minister.

The number of persons (other than part-time local agents) employed by approved societies, according to the latest information, is approximately:—

Whole-time

360

Part-time

80

The staff of the unified society will be appointed by the provisional committee of the unified society, who will doubtless employ as many of the existing staffs as possible. As the office of the unified society will be in Dublin, it may be difficult to provide employment for provincial staffs and it is not possible at this stage to state the number of persons whose services will consequently be dispensed with and paid compensation.

For the same reason, it is not possible to give a reliable estimate of the cost of compensation under the Bill, but it will probably amount to £90,000.
