Vol. 48 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labour for Housing Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if in future he will insist on the regulation that all labour should be recruited through the local labour exchange in the case of contractors for housing schemes which are being carried out by local authorities, seeing that Government funds are being provided for such schemes either by way of loan or grant; and thus prevent the possibility of contractors being intimidated by local political clubs to employ only men belonging to such clubs.

There is no regulation in force requiring contractors for housing schemes to recruit labour through the labour exchanges. While it is advisable that labour should, where possible, be recruited from these sources, action taken by my Department has been limited to a recommendation to local authorities, that this course should be followed.
